Un des tartans les plus connus et reconnus au monde avec le Royal Stewart est le Burberry check. Apparu chez Burberry's pour la première fois en 1924 dans la doublure du fameux imperméable, ce tartan aux couleurs blanc, noir et chameau est indissociable de la marque.     

The Burberry tartan is, beside the Royal Stewart tartan, one of the most known and recognized tartans in the world. First used by Burberry's as lining for its famous trench-coats, it has since become the identity of the brand.   

L'origine / Origins:

Le Burberry tartan fait partie des fashion tartans et ne possède donc aucune connection avec un clan. Le créateur n'est pas connu. Selon le Scottish Register of Tartans, où il a été enregistré, il a été vu pour la première fois vers 1920 sur des bagages fabriqués en Italie qui étaient vendus chez Scotch House, un grand magasin à Londres situé près du magasin Burberry. Il fut ensuite adopté par Thomas Burberry, créateur de la marque et inventeur du  trench-coat.    

The Burberry tartan is a fashion tartan and has no clan connection. The designer is unknown. According to the Scottish Register of Tartans where it was officially registered, it was seen for the first time around 1920 on an Italian designer's luggage that was sold at London's Scotch House departement store, situated near Burberry's shop. It was then adopted by Thomas Burberry, creator of the brand and inventor of the trench-coat.

Les différentes couleurs / the different colours:

Je vous ai expliqué dans mon article ici, qu'un tartan peut avoir plusieurs couleurs. Voici les 6 couleurs du Burberry tartan officiellement enregistrées au Scottish Tartan Register. Cela n'empêche pas les produits de Burberry, surtout les chemises d'hommes,de présenter d'autres couleurs de fond. Depuis 1901, on peut également trouver le trademark logo avec le chevalier Burberry et l'inscription "prosum" signifiant "en avant" sur le Haymarket check (voir: les différents checks) :

As described in my post here, a same tartan can have different colours. Here are the 6 colours of the Burberry tartan that are officially registered with the Scottish Tartan Register. But there are many more colours used by Burberry, mainly for men shirts. In 1901 was introduced the Burberry equestrian knight and the slogan "prosum", meaning "forwards". This logo can be seen on the Haymarket check (see below).

Les différents checks / The different checks:

Bien que le tartan de Burberry soit un vrai tartan, la marque y réfère uniquement comme "check" (check signifiant carreau) et jamais comme tartan. Voici les différentes versions de check commercialisées: 

Despite being a real tartan, Burberry only refers to it as "check". Here are the different versions of the check that can be found: 

                 Nova Check: Le motif du tartan est souvent posé en 

             diagonale sur les sacs.            

                Nova check: The sett of the tartan is often laid out

             diagonally on bags.

             Haymarket check: le tartan original avec le logo du chevalier 

             The original tartan with the equestrian knight.          

                 House check: avec check classique / with classic check      

           Smoked check: House check aux couleurs plus foncées.

           House check in darker colours .

          Exploded: Le check est décomposé / exploded check.               

 Beat: Inspiré par le parfum masculin Beat ce check classique en gris, noir et blanc

a été introduit en 2009 par Christopher Bailey.

L'utilisation / Use:

Nous trouvons le Burberry tartan de nos jours évidemment dans la doublure du trench, puis en grandes ou en petites touches sur les foulards, sacs, vêtements, accessoires et produits de beauté.

The tartan is still seen in the lining of trench-coats and appears also in a bold or more subtle way on bags, scarves, clothes, accessories and beauty products.

Le Thom(p)son tartan:  

En raison de sa popularité et du prix des produits Burberry, le tartan est évidemment sujet aux contre-façons. Mais il existe aussi un tartan enregistré qui ressemble fort au Burberry tartan: le Thom(p)son Camel. Il s'agit également d'un fashion tartan qui est vendu dans tous les magasins où l'on vend du tartan, à un prix sensiblement inférieur au Burberry tartan. 

Burberry is popular and not cheap - and there are of course a lot of counterfeits around. If you want to buy a genuine tartan that comes close to the Burberry tartan, you can turn to the Thom(p)son camel that is sold in every good tartan shop. It's also a fashion tartan but costs a lot less than the Burberry.

Si vous vous rendez en Ecosse vous ne pourrez pas échapper aux vêtements, accessoires et autres babioles en ou affichant du tartan. Et vous allez certainement vous poser la question: Je n'appartiens à aucun clan, puis-je porter du tartan quand-même ? Et la réponse est : oui !

Même si le tartan est de nos jours (et seulement depuis le 19ème siècle) un moyen d'exprimer son appartenance à un clan, tout un chacun peut porter le tartan qu'il veut. Vous pouvez faire un choix selon vos goûts (couleurs, motif). Vous pouvez aussi faire une recherche à partir d'un nom de famille qui ressemble au vôtre ou qui vous parle d'une manière ou d'une autre.

If you go to Scotland  one day, you'll be sure to find everywhere clothes, accessories and other objects made of or with tartan and you'll certainly ask yourself this question: I don't have any clan connection, can I wear tartan nevertheless ? And the answer is: Yes, you can !

Although tartan is nowadays (and only since the 19th century) considered as a way to show one's connection to a clan, everybody can wear the tartan he likes. You can chose a tartan because you like the colours or the checks. You can also wear a tartan whose name is similar to your own or that appeals to you in some way.

Ils ne sont pas liés à des clans ou des associations (voir mon article ici) mais permettent à tous d'exprimer leur attachement à l'Ecosse, à des personnalités ou événements qui ont marqué l'histoire. Le Jacobite tartan est connu depuis 1707 et fut porté par les participants à la Rébellion des Jacobites de 1715. Il est associé à l'identité nationale écossaise.  

The Jacobite tartan has been known since the Union of 1707 and was worn by participants in the Jacobite Rebellion of 1715 and is associated with the Scots national identity.

Black Watch : 

Tartan militaire porté en 1725 par les soldats du 42ème Régiment Royal des Highlanders, premier bataillon d'infanterie écossais levé afin de garantir la paix dans les Highlands.

Military tartan worn in 1725 by the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment in order to keep peace in the Highlands.

Royal Stewart: 

  Tartan officiel de la reine Elizabeth II.
